Roman-Germanic Central Museum (Mainz, Germany)

The Roman-Germanic Central Museum (RGZM) is a research institution active worldwide for archaeology, prehistory and early history. One expression of the co-operation between the RGZM and Research Group, which dates still from the then HKFZ Mainz-Trier, was the submission of a linked application for support within the framework of the state initiative for excellence.

The Research Group here supports the research centre Byzantine Archaeology Mainz (BAM), a joint institution of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the RGZM. The research centre serves as a communication platform for researchers in the field of Byzantine Archaeology and wants to establish this as a separate subject. It pursues projects of its own, e.g. on “Crafts, Workshops and Trade in the Byzantine Empire”, and organises workshops and conferences. In addition, it awards scholarships and co-ordinates exhibitions on relevant topics.
